Twelfth Prayer: Some Flames Never Die [Action/Video] Late Afternoon

[A video feed flickers to life, showing a teenage girl dressed in long, thick looking priestess's robes sitting outside the little shrine on the riverbank. And for once in her Luceti life, Rei Hino looks genuinely happy with how things are going. Everything has gone...strangely well...for her lately. Despite the invasion, the discovery in the tunnel, and all of that, everything was actually alright in Rei's little world. So much so that it seemed like an ideal time to have a little celebration for an event that had been pretty significant for her a year before. It's not much, she never expects a large crowd for anything she does, but then she's never been one for that sort of thing, either. And who knows, it may even help to lift people's spirits after their own troubles.

There's no sigh, no subtle frown, no vaguely irritated look in her eye. She's even smiling at the camera as she addresses it.]

Good afternoon Luceti. My name is Rei Hino, and as some of you might know...and some might not...I maintain a small shrine here across the path from Community House 2. I haven't broadcast about it in a while, but I thought today might be a good day to extend an invitation to anyone who might want a peaceful place to spend some time before the weather changes. It was one year ago today that Brave Vesperia completed building it, and it felt appropriate to mark the date with a little something.

[She gestures to some tables of food she's prepared or gathered from the shops and bakery, a variety of snacks, along with curry, pasta, and various other easy meals really. Rei can cook alright, but this was kind of last minute, after all.]

So please, come eat and relax. If you like, I'll read your fortune and give you a good luck charm too. I know things have been stressful lately, so please consider it. It may do you some good.

[A pair of crows flap into view, landing on her shoulders as she turns to look at the building. With a laugh Rei playfully runs a finger under one's beak and looks to the journal.]

And you know...it's strange, having been here as long as I have. I've had a lot of friends come and go, and seen a lot of strange and unsettling things. But looking at this building...it makes me happy. Maybe it's because it's like my home. My...real home. [Rei's smile grows almost wistful, weary even.] Does anyone else have a place like that here? A place that makes you feel at peace, maybe even a little nostalgic? I'd like to know...even if you don't come eat.

[And then she waves a hand, whispers a word, and the book closes with a sudden gust of wind. Harry would've been proud...]

Action

[Rei will be available at the shrine all afternoon after around 2:00, or if you like you can catch her earlier in the day in the shops with armfuls of food. Nothing too fancy is going on, just a little impromptu anniversary party.]

Well, then. Let's dance.

[and she steps through the torii gate and reaches out to stroke a finger down the ofuda which...does nothing. But it makes her smile so there's that.]

Oh...It seems I'm safe after all.

[Rei smiles and lets her will flicker into the scroll. It stiffens to the hardness of steel and flies over to stick onto Robin's forehead anyway.

It doesn't do anything, but...it's still there.]

I suppose you are. I guess it just likes you.

[she blinks and then laughs softly]

Unfortunately I'm taken...twice over. I doubt either will be happy about a third claim.

[she gestures to it]

Can you...?

[A flick of her wrist and the paper returns to Rei's fingers and disappears up her sleeve.]

Of course.

[Robin is impressed. It's rare to see spiritual power, whatever else it may be, actually work.]

You seem talented at that, Rei-san. Do you get a chance to use them often?

["You have two choices: join me or die."

It was the oddest and most memorable introduction that Cliff ever had with a hot chick, one that firmly cemented the idea of a woman who might be better to have on his side. Cliff grinned and lifted his eyes to the sky.]

Just wait until you get to know her. She can give some of those sharp tongues in town a run for their money, and then some.

Well then, it's good your finally saw reason!

[Even if it's not as if most people make that sort of conclusion until a year or more in. Usually two or more. If they make it at all. But still, she snickers at this]

Well, the invasion changed things for me. And other things too.

[Rei's voice goes quiet for a moment. Haruhi does not need to know about Fenimore.]

In any event. I don't like leaving things unfinished.

_{[ Kirk jerks his hand back, panting, staring wide-eyed at her. Magic
didn't scare him, he had been here long enough to be okay with it, but
that... that was not okay. It was not okay, and he hated the way it made
his gut freeze and his body shake. He rubbed the hand she had taken,
looking at the fire for an instant like it might bite him. ]}

What in the hell was that?

[Other things... Wow that should probably not be asked about]

It isn't good to leave things unfinished, no. I'd be surprised if you were that sort, though.

Would you? I'll take that as a compliment then, Haruhi-san.

[The picture in the journal is of an honest, open smile.]

Conflict.

[Rei answers that simply, her voice flat and devoid of emotion. It's not the worst vision she's had, not by a long shot...but she does not look happy.]

Conflict due to that man. Who is he?

I don't know. I've never seen him before - heck I could barely see him at all.

Ofuda? Not as often as at home. But I've had ample opportunity for my other powers. With...this place being what it is.

Well that's always fun, you know.

[Rei just smiles]

So, what's in your bag?

Y-yeah. I...wish I could tell you more. But that's what the fire showed me.

That sounds like it would be perfect! [ He'll glance over his shoulder at Rei and nod towards the front of the shrine. He'll direct the tables with a small twist of his wrist and they'll slowly float to the ground, the legs opening up with ease from the wind. ]

This is so much easier than physically lifting things. I wonder why I haven't actually done it until now. [ Probably because he's a derp but he sounds like he's joking, maybe. ]

Because doing things the natural way is really important too. There's value to be had in hard work.

That's what Grandpapa would always say, anyway.

Right, the fire.

_{[ He rose, brushing his hands along his jeans, the uncomfortable
feeling returning. ]}

No offense, but I think I need some fresh air and sunshine.

That's fine.

[She stands up and nods towards the entrance.]

I'm sorry...the vision wasn't a happy one...

It's fine. If anything, it convinced me it was real. If you were faking it, it would have been rainbows and butterflies.

Aye.

In the zoo.

[His expression.]

While Robin was married to my best friend who isn't a brother here.

[All of this hemming and hawing has the unsurprising result of not convincing Grune in the slightest. She looks just as delighted by the pair of them as she had before they had halfheartedly tried to convince her of their not-special someoneness and her smile doesn't dim. If anything, it only becomes more fond.]

That's all right. The two of you just need a little time to get to know one another, so that little by little, you'll become very, very close.

[And then she actually clasps her hands at the thought of their beautiful future together. Yes.]

[He passed the bag over.]

Something that looks good, but isn't quite for the kids.

[Not that he cared about legality. It was personality and maturity level for him.]

...I figure'd it'd be fine, this being an anniversary and all. But, it's your discretion here.

[Fenimore's heart skips when she feels Rei's shoulder touch hers, though mostly out of surprise, and the emphasis on the yet...well. She would have expected some pleasant feelings arising from that kind of a signal: it was flattering that Rei would consider the thought at least not unappealing -- a part of Fenimore's difficulty in wording her denial in front of Rei came from not wanting to imply that going would with Rei would be a bad thing. But, to her own surprise, she feels a little happier hearing it than she would have expected. She's certain she hasn't fallen for Rei so far, and she's pretty sure that she doesn't have a crush on her, either. Still, if that yet pleases her this much, it's possible that she's at least beginning to develop a crush.

Well, perhaps. She doesn't have the time to properly examine the state of her emotions before she has to return her attention to Grune. Their words don't seem to have dissauded her. If anything, it almost seems to have made it worse.

She glances over at Rei, as though to ask, "now what?" But since they haven't spent too much time together yet, her ability to communicate things with a look or read any return signals from Rei are not exactly stellar, so she'll give up on that and look back to Grune. The solidarity of their position at least helps her to put more confidence into her words, even if her face is still somewhat pink.]

Well, I guess that's...technically true, but -- Grune, we might just become friends. You shouldn't read too far into it.
