faithfulflame | Fifth Prayer: Loss

[She'd just checked Usagi's room, and it was empty. Nothing remained of Sailor Moon save for a half-empty bucket of pudding just sitting in the fridge. With a cry of frustration, the normally reserved miko took it out and hurled it at the trash bin, chocolate oozing down the wall. This was just too much. First Ami, then that awful Apep creature taking Sabriel, and now Usagi!

Her friends would need to be told, of course. So, a few minutes later a Voice transmission pops out over the journals. Rei's voice is tight and controlled, but there's definitely an undercurrent of sadness]

I'm sorry to inform everyone that Tsukino Usagi-san has been sent home by the Malnosso.

Please think of her fondly, and wish her luck.

Should anyone wish to make a formal prayer for her, I will be available to help with that, so please contact me via the journal.

[Closing the feed, Rei picks up her journal and heads out to the little tent shrine she, Ami, and Usagi had put together months before, lighting a flame on the brazier with Eferin and preparing several prayer strips of her own for her friend and Sailor Moon. She burns them, and sends her wishes to the other girl, whereever she might be]

[Rei's sitting there, staring into the flames. Her face is stained with drying tears, and she's clearly holding back more. She has to remain strong. Loss is part of life, but this...on top of everything else? It feels like someone's torn out her heart.]

S...sabriel-san? [She coughs a bit, choking back a sob]

Oh Rei-

[Setting down her bag as she steps into the shrine she kneels and gently pulls the other girl into a hug.]

I'm so sorry...it's okay to let it out.

[Rei...accepts the hug, flinching only slightly. She...wasn't sure how to feel, or what to think. This was all just so much, and so sudden.

So, she just lets it all go. And breaks into tears again. She can only be so strong for so long]

[For a moment Sabriel is reminded of the beginning of her last year at Wyverley. One of the new students had been sent to the college and was homesick...Sabriel had sat with her, much like she now sat with Rei, and comforted the young girl to sleep. This sorrow wasn't going to go away so easily though, but Sabriel's not going anywhere.]

It will be okay...

[Rei...just balls up and cries for a little while longer. Sabriel...shouldn't be comforting her, it should be the other way around. She had to be strong for her friends. For more than just Sabriel, too. Ami was going to need her. And after a while she just...sniffs and looks up at Sabriel]

I-I-I k-know. S-sh-she's in a better place...home. To-tokyo

It's okay to feel sad when someone you care about goes away, you don't have to hide it.

[Sabriel nods understandingly, giving Rei's shoulders a careful and gentle squeeze, ever mindful of the one that is injured.]

You will see her again when you return home too.

[Rei shudders and pulls back, her hands resting on her friend's]

Yes. But...who knows how long that could take. Usagi-chan...she...was here for a year. Ami-chan has been here for three.

[Sabriel frowns thoughtfully, remembering the sorrow she had felt at having lost her father and being taken away from Touchstone when she had first been brought to Luceti.]

There is always the possibility that she could return...but assuming that the Malnosso do not decide to do so, we learn to cope with the separation. Keeping her in your thoughts keeps a part of her with you.

Not even the Malnosso can take that away.

[Rei doesn't mention the obvious: Her Usagi is a different Usagi. She just shakes her head]

No, they can't. [Unless they rewrite your memories]

Sabriel-chan. I'm not sure, though. Usagi-chan may not be going back to a better place.

[That might be so, but then that also means there is another Rei to support and protect that other Usagi.]

Wherever she is now, you and Ami and the other guardians are protecting her. I have faith that you will keep her safe.

I know. I just...don't want her to have to fight the Dark Kingdom again.

[The first she's mentioned of it, but, it just sort of slips out unintentionally.]

[The name is unfamiliar but...with a title like that it's hard to believe anything good can come from it. Giving Rei's hands a gentle squeeze she gives the other girl a warm but firm look.]

We all have battles we must face. Should it be her destiny to fight then you must have faith in her strength; believe in her.

I...I know. We overcame it, in my world. But the fighting, its hard. And...Usagi-chan took it hardest of all.

[Sabriel's firm look is helping, though]

But you succeeded. She has done so once, she can do so again.

[Have some more firm look then. Sabriel's actually had a conversation similar to this...when Adele's friend Alistair had left and she was worried for the man's safety in his home world.]

Worrying won't help her, or you so long as we're here. It will only make you miserable. Instead of thinking of all of the hardships that might face Usagi, think of her strength; her triumphs.

She will be alright.

[Rei lets out a breathy sigh, but nods. Sabriel is right, there isn't anything she can do here. She must be strong.]

I know. Its...hard, though. Being alone again. Ami-chan is still missing, and that house. Its so cold, like the spirits have abandoned it.

The houses around here are too big to live in by yourself.

[Sabriel nods, thoughtful.]

Is there anyone you might be able to stay with until Ami returns? Or who might be able to keep you company?

Not...that I know of, Sabriel-chan. I-I don't have many friends. I'm...not a very social person.

[Sabriel nods, thinking quietly before she murmurs.]

If you want...I could keep you company until Ami returns. I'd still need to drop by House 44 to make sure everything's alright there but I don't want to leave you on your own.

I think...that may be a good idea.

[She leans against Sabriel's shoulder, really really glad to have someone like that in her life]

If...you are ok with it.

I would not offer if I were uncomfortable with the idea Rei. If anything I was worried you'd be...hesitant about the idea.

[She gives Rei's hand a soft squeeze, supporting Rei's lean easily.]

But if it will make you happy then I would be glad to stay.

I...would not be. I-I honestly hate being...alone.

[An admission only 5 other people, and two cats, have ever gotten out of her]

It'd be very nice.

[At that Sabriel turns to give Rei another hug, gentle but warm. If this was the least she could do to start making up to the young priestess then she would be more than happy to help her friend.]

Then I would be happy to stay as long as you need me to.

[Wordlessly, Rei just...wraps her arms around Sabriel and stares into the fire. What else needs to be said? She's grateful to have a friend, one that she made...without the influence of destiny. Even if its fleeting, its still nice.]
