[Her face goes white and she steps back, surprise registering on her face.]
I...think this is going to be one of those conversations. Tea? Or soda, or anything to eat? I'm going to be a bad host and drink even if you don't. But please sit.
[She gestures towards the couch, and then marches right into the kitchen, returning a half second later with the teapot she'd been boiling and the serving tray covered in all the proper accouterments as well as several sweets.]
[His arms cross around his middle, and he contemplates her offer.]
Whatever you got is fine with me, though. I don't exactly know how long it's been since I've last eaten, actually.
[He hadn't even taken the time to see how long he had been dead for. A day? A couple days? Some people had mentioned there was a standard for the dying and revival times, but he had forgotten it by now.
He settles on the couch as she gets the food from the kitchen, but he doesn't bother to touch it for now. Her question, however, takes a moment to register, and he looks up in surprise.]
... uh, I think so? I kinda just woke up now, and--
[And a thought occurs to him, something he hadn't taken into consideration before.]
--Wait, did something go on in the city while I was kidnapped or something?
[Rei nods towards the tray then, indicating the sweets and teacups. And pops to the fridge to bring out some leftover rice and fish, popping them in the microwave. He should have food, she reasons.]
You just woke up.
[That basically means only one thing. She has gotten some info from others, and figures it's probably best to just tell him flat out. But then, considering that it didn't bother her that much, and other people had freaked out, she decides instead to let him draw his own conclusions and ask her if he doesn't understand. He's more perceptive than she'd first reckoned, so hopefully he will.]
You died too, then? Because three days ago, a good many people were kidnapped and taken to different places, outside the normal areas. Dozens. I knew a lot of them. I was taken as well, and I've only been awake since this morning, myself.
[Without missing a beat, he pours the tea into the cups and debates on picking up one of the sweets. It's true he hadn't eaten in what was now apparently days, but the subject matter wasn't helping his appetite much. Still, a little nibble probably wouldn't hurt...
... until she dropped that bombshell, anyway. 'Too'? 'Dozens'? There was a long, heavy silence as the implications behind this settled in his head, and he settled the sweet back on the plate with a small 'clink'. Where could he even begin with all of that?]
This is crazy. Abso-friggin'-loutely nuts. I only saw four others when I was in that nasty tunnel myself, but if there were more...
[Could they have been in the other halls that his group decided not to take? Probably not, as they would have tried to leave markers behind too, but... on the subject of markers...]
I can't believe it, though. How did YOU of all people wind up getting whacked by them? I doubt you were dumb enough to take one of their belongings or something.
[Rei sat down and picked up her cup, lifting her shoulder in a tired shrug. She was so very, very done with today. Too many people had needed her time and attention and she couldn't be on anymore. So, Yusuke was going to get the more relaxed Rei Hino. she just doesn't have the capacity to put up much of a front.]
It sounds like everyone was taken to different places. A library, a mountain stronghold, a filing room, a machine factory, and my group ended up in an old, seemingly abandoned prison.
[His question gets a snort, along with an arched eyebrow. Stole...something? He stole something? OF course he did. But that might be a good thing.]
[A beat, her chest swelling up with pride.] It was a prison not just for the living, but for the dead. The other girl and I, we saw hundreds of ghosts all trapped there. They wanted us to free them, so...we did. We laid them to rest, as they asked. I got the feeling they had been there a long, long time. It was a pretty ordinary ritual, the kind any onmyouji can do. But because there were so many ghosts, it took a lot of concentration.
And that's when the jailer hit me with a sucker punch. It did...something...to me while I was too distracted to get a proper defense up, and I died. The ghosts were freed, though, so whatever it did was far too late. Those poor people can finally rest, and honestly? That's what really matters, I think.
[Sorry, Rei-- she was one of the few (if only) people he knew here that dealt with the ghosts in person prior to this, and there wasn't really anyone else he could go to with a spirit-sensitive perspective to this crazy mess.
He does notice that look she shoots him at his question, however, and he can't help but look a little peevish back. That whole scenario can wait until she was finished with her story.
... but man, what a story that was. Yusuke stares at her for a good moment, impressed and also... maybe a little jealous? Disappointed, perhaps? Because after all of THAT--]
Jeez. Sounds like you had a much cooler adventure than I did. Or at least something that was worth dying over, anyway.
Me, though?
[And there's a dry snort.]
Died three times and all I got was a rock. Go figure, huh? I thought I could get more out of the ghost and find out what was going on, but I don't really think he was in a chatty mood. [And WHO'S FAULT WAS THAT, YUSUKE...]
[Well, if Yusuke wanted to get Rei to frown, he manages. She nibbles on a cookie and studies his face for a long moment, trying to decide how to respond to that. It was worth dying over, but it wasn’t cool in the slightest, though he probably already knew that. What he says though, sticks with her.]
Died three times? Let’s start there. You got up twice, before now? [Rocks can wait, but that’s weird by her standards, and that’s saying something.]
[Rei's question gets a curious look in response, not expecting that to be the first thing she latches onto from all of that.]
Well... yeah. I told you about how I turned into a demon back home, didn't I? It wasn't exactly the first time I kicked the bucket there.
[But then a thought occurs to him, and his face lights up in understanding.]
OH. Wait, you don't mean from the whole kidnapping thing, do you? Because that would be some ViViD level craziness getting killed that many times and coming back again.
Right. I thought that's what you meant. But...no. Okay.
[She gets it, her head dipping in amusement at her own mistake. But then the way he'd worded it had been odd. No matter.]
We're tied then. This was my third death as well. [In this lifetime.] It's funny, how so many people here reacted, but it's different once you know what's on the other side, isn't it? [She chuffs a laugh, waving her hand to wash away the odd topic.]
[To be fair, perhaps his joke only really made sense when you knew the rest of the crap he had to deal with back home. It was his fault for wording it so ambiguously.
There was a raised eyebrow at comment, wondering just how often she was going to throw him for a loop.]
Pretty much. Not that there's really an other side here, but maybe that's kind of a good thing. They'd probably have one helluva headache dealing with all the rush revival jobs for everyone stuck in this place. But how in the hell did you die three--
[--oh. Right. The rock. That's part of the reason he dropped by here, wasn't it?
Digging into his jeans pocket, he fishes out said stone and sets it onto the table with a faint 'clink'. It's uneven and sort of jagged, as if it was blasted off of something else, and, most importantly-- it glows. It's not obnoxiously bright or anything, but it's enough to clue in that this hunk of stone is Not Normal.]
Rocks, more like it. These things were built into some weird pseudo-windows in this underground tunnel we were all stuck in.
[And now, he looks sheepish.]
I sorta, uh... broke one or two of them. It was for a good reason though! And definitely not because I was pissed off about anything.
[Rei wasn't really up to discussing that, not right now. Especially not with this new object staring her in the face. She reaches out, poking at the stone with a finger and frowning.]
Is it...magic? It doesn't look like any stone I've ever seen before, and I don't think that it's got any traces of arcane energy on it. Or spiritual energy.
[She turns to look back at the delinquent, eyebrow arched. She is very much assuming you threw a temper tantrum, and judging you a little bit for it.]
[HE CAN FEEL YOU JUDGING HIM REI-- and she's not entirely WRONG to, because it was a pretty stupid move in hindsight. But it made sense at the time!!]
Apparently these things were owned by a ghost who didn't like people busting up their property. It tried to do... something to me at first, but I fought it off and tried to get the rest of the group to get outta there before it got any more bright ideas.
[And there's a frown, the next part not leaving a good taste in his mouth.]
Unfortunately, either we had a slow-poke or the ghost is some sort of track champion, but one of our crew got possessed and tried to take us down instead. [Except the ghost actually just brought out Souji's vampire side and let him loose, but Yusuke was too busy running to catch that part.] Anyway, I sorta... yelled at the thing and it asked me if I was volunteering for something, so of course I said yes, as long as it gave me some info and left the others alone.
Next thing I know, there's a hand in my chest and I'm in my bed three days later with this thing. I can't really pick up any energy or anything from it, so I figured I'd take it to you since your sense is better at stuff like that. [And there's a sigh.] But if you can't pick up anything from it, then we're probably back at square one.
Still, she's not going to interrupt him, just letting him blurt everything out. It sounded like they'd had a much worse time than her group had, even though they'd all died. Three of them did so because they were morons.]
I'm sorry. That actually sounds like a really, really bad set of circumstances. [Especially for this place.] I wish that I knew what it's reasoning was, but this being Cerealia and all...that's a little hard to really pin down.
[It's easier when it's dark gods and mad queens seeking life energy, or vengeful aliens from the future or something. This is just weird.
There's a pause and she picks up the stone, turning it over in her fingers and studying it. It's strange. It's glowing, but it's not magical in the slightest. That...]
And no, we're not necessarily back at square one. Magic isn't the only thing out there, after all. What if it's just a natural crystal? Or...actually. [She looks more intently at it, her frown deepening. Crystals. Rocks. Just like...the Power Guardians. And the Moon Kingdom. And that was as much...]
It could be technological. Just like back home. Sometimes, technology doesn't look like you'd expect it. [Like crystalline castles and the entire structure of Neo Crystal Tokyo, Nemesis, and...]
[There was a shrug in reply to that, and he waves it off.]
Nah, it could've been a lot worse. Honestly, before all THAT stuff, we were just wandering in a weird maze for an hour or so. I think being in a prison surrounded by a ton of ghosts would probably be the crappier pick, although you wound up doing something really cool with it in the end. [And he scowls, dredging up the bit of info he gleaned from the ghost.] Anyway, it said it was one of CERES' many 'failed experiments' of some sort. Maybe the crystals were part of it?
[He perks up as she observes the rock, however, glad to know this wasn't a complete dead end. Buuuut that wasn't quite the answer he was expecting or hoping for.]
A machine? Really? It can't be-- you'd definitely see some wiring or something in there, right? Not to mention it's broken, so unless this thing is super complex, I can't see how it's still glowing.
Possibly. But...[She snorts. Because that's a bit of a stupid thought, Yusuke.] It is very complex. Think about it. We're in a world where there are spacecraft, a colony with realistic virtual reality, and we have these. [Waves her CEREVice.] They don't have obvious wiring do they?
It's like one of Clarke's third law. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. If we think it's magic, but neither of us can pick up anything magical from it, then we have to assume it's either natural, or a machine.
Which...means we might should contact Hiro Hamada. I'd suggest Tony Stark, but he's departed now. Either way, Hiro is a wizard with machines. He could probably tell us if it is or isn't technological. And maybe work out what it does.
[Look, he's only really familiar with what's current in 90's technology and whatever weird organic mash-ups the Demon World had, leave him alone Rei 8(]
Well, they do on the inside, don't they? Like I'm sure if we bust open one of these CEREVice things, they'll have a whole mess of crap in them.
[But you can see his face slowly growing blank at the mention of laws and technology and all that fancy stuff, and he grimaces once she's finished.]
Yeah, I'm... just gonna roll with what you said, about the magic and machines and all that.
You know where we can find this guy, though? Or do we just shoot him a message all 'hey, we found a weird rock that's possibly a machine, can you tinker with it', and hope he doesn't think we're crazy?
Maybe. But do we really know? It could be anything. Powered by crystals formed into specific patterns to conduct energy or other things like that. [Like on the Moon.]
And yes, as a matter of fact I do. He's one of my better friends in the colony, so getting him to check this out wouldn't be a big deal I think. He'd probably be excited, and he's definitely reliable.
[Even if he looks like a child.]
I can do that now, if you want to go ahead and check it out?
I dunno, these things were used as underground windows. I don't think they're half as complicated as that if they just stuck 'em in a frame and called it a day.
[He rests his hand on his chin, giving this some thought. Well, if Rei had that much faith in this Hiro person...]
... but okay, fine, let's get in touch with this guy. May as well get to the bottom of this as soon as we can, right?
[She plucks out her CEREVice and gives Hiro Hamada a quick text.]
Hiro, can you please come by my apartment? A friend has something that we think you should see. Something from the incident, and something that might be technological in nature.
[It doesn't take long for Hiro to text back with a "Sure, on my way!. It also doesn't take time for there to be a knock on Rei's apartment door. She'd caught him just as he was about to head out so it wasn't hard to change direction. Baymax is in his suitcase and rolling behind Hiro and he has his backpack but he looks a little more bright-eyed than usual.
Probably the promise of new tech, actually. As soon as Rei opens the door he grins up at her.]
You know, I'm just now starting to see how many people stole stuff from those kidnappings...it's kinda awesome.
[Meanwhile, while Rei's getting in contact with Hiro, Yusuke's going to take advantage of some of the food and snacks set in front of him, now that the heavier stuff has been put out into the open. After all, he technically didn't eat for three days, so he may as well start catching up a little now.
However, the knock to the door came a lot faster than he had anticipated, and he hastily finished up the last snack before Rei went to answer it. No use stuffing his gourd and looking dumb in front of a super smart high tech guy. Weird, though, his voice sounded pretty young--
And then Rei steps aside and he finally gets a good view of Hiro, and his face drops in surprise.]
You-- He's a kid? Seriously?!
[EXCELLENT FIRST IMPRESSION SKILLS THERE, URAMESHI, GOLD STAR FOR YOU]
[You know. He was just starting to get used to people taking him seriously without questioning his age and his smile falls flat as he stares at Yusuke. Fear him in all of his five foot tall wrath. But he's mostly giving him an "are you for real??" look before he sighs quietly and looks up at Rei.]
You didn't tell him much about me, huh? [Judging by his expression toward Rei it's fine. He doesn't expect her to (she shouldn't have to), but he's still a little annoyed with the reaction. Ah well.] Nice to meet you too, dude.
[Rei shrugs her shoulders and shuts the door, standing behind Hiro and patting his shoulders. She half expected this, honestly. Yusuke was not...bright.]
I didn't think it was necessary. Regardless. Yes, Yusuke-kun, he's young but he's one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. He's got a gift with machines.

Rei.
I met a ghost. And I'm pretty damn sure it wasn't one of the ones you told me about.
[Nevermind the how and why for the moment-- this was the most important thing to mention.]

I...think this is going to be one of those conversations. Tea? Or soda, or anything to eat? I'm going to be a bad host and drink even if you don't. But please sit.
