[at the very least, Venus could make Mars laugh even though they were in the middle of a dire situation.

once things start cooking, she comes over and sits beside Mars, then leans her head on the other's shoulder] You know, this is kind of romantic. Us trapped underground, making a campfire to cook monsters, sharing a meal...

[Mars doesn't shrug off the touch, or even seem to react, but her heartbeat quickens imperceptibly, because it's obvious Venus means it. And it is a little bit.]

It...is very cozy...

[only the goddess of love could find such a situation romantic. she grins, turning her head so that she can nip at Mars' neck.

Venus, please. it's dangerous out here. this is no time to be making out]

[It's dangerous, but they have bird sentinels. And Mars shivers when she feels that bite, hand quivering and rattling the shell bowl a little...]

V-Venus...

[that earns an amused giggle from her partner. the blonde backs off after that, but only because she doesn't want Mars to drop their food into the fire pit. that would be a tragedy. maybe. depending on how it tasted]

[Only? Mars seems a little said, but a little relieved too. This was public, iyaaaaan!

Soon the smell of roasting fish fills the air...]

Well...it's as done as it'll be. Here, have a bite.

[by now, Venus has taken off her gloves, and her shoes, since they're sort of relaxing. and she moves to pick off some of the meat. it's hot, and she takes a few seconds to tear and then blow on the piece she gets]

Well, here goes nothing! [it certainly smells fishy... but she is hungry, and she's going to try it. Venus brings the piece up to her lips and chomps down on it. she probably should have taken a more cautious bite at first because.

it's awful. and it reads on her face, nose crinkling, eyes narrowing, lips quivering in disgust] ...........

[Mars seats herself next to the blonde, peeling off her own gloves and reaching cautiously for a bite. Her attention is fixed on Venus's reaction though, and it's with some trepidation that she takes her own first bite...and groans internally.]

This...is foul.

[She swallows, makes a face, and goes for the salt in her bag. And some of the other dried herbs there too, ones that are edible.]

Maybe we can salvage it.

I don't know. [Venus sticks out her tongue. she's happy she didn't just up and vomit right then, because she so could have!] Do you think there's any nutritional value to eating this at all?

Something is better than nothing.

[And sigh, and she starts rubbing salt on the meat, which...helps...a little.]

I am just going to start keeping freeze dried food in my pack and so are you.

[Venus will continue eating some more, though she's taking far smaller bites than her first one]

I still don't know how you had time to grab your pack. We were tossed down here so fast.

[Mars adds salt to her own, slowly taking little bites too.]

It's right on the floor next to my side of our bed. So, it's all in the reflexes.

[man, this is so gross. Venus has waterfall tears streaming down her cheeks]

I'll try to think about that next time. [she finally stuffs the last bit into her mouth and swallows it. bleeeeeh] It's a good idea, considering we're always pulled somewhere, or another.

Exactly my point. It's a smart idea. I might do a PSA about it, to be honest.

[Because this is a repeat incident.]

Feeling less hungry at least?

[Because she's rooting in her pack and pulling out a small bag of spearmint candies.]

I have a few of these too. I don't want to break them all out because we may have to have this for more than one meal, but here.

[Venus nods at Mars' question, and then gratefully nabs a candy. this will take away the awful aftertaste, at least]

Thanks. Why don't you get a little rest while I stand watch?

[Mars pops her own into her mouth and nods, leaning against her partner.]

Thank you, dear. I...appreciate it.

[It's been a trying couple of days, all in all. She needs that.]

[Venus knows, and she's a bit too wound up to sleep. so she'll stay awake, watch out for people who might want food.

she presses a kiss to Mars' head and then settles in for the long haul]

[This is why she loves you, Venus. You know just how to nudge her to do what's needed. Even if that's taking care of herself.]
